I put a little warning out about this last year (and the year before I think..?) and here I am again serving you with a ‘christmasy’ coffee shop caution...

If you walk into one the many coffee shops that surround us, it won't have escaped your attention that seasonal coffee's are back to tempt us into submission. 

No sooner has the ‘Pumpkin Spice Latte’ Halloween version been and gone…all the coffee chains have rolled out the Christmas/Winter versions with tempting names like Gingerbread, Eggnog, toffee nut, Caramelised orange & Cream…etc

Now at first glance these little ‘fun’ coffees may seem like a good way to warm your cockles on the cold Christmassy winter days…what harm can it do?

You confidently turn your nose up at the chocolate muffins, cakes, biscuits and flapjacks that are staring you in the face…

…'cos you know there are full of sugar, calories and processed rubbish and are not part of your health and/or weight loss plan.

‘Well done me’…you say to yourself…as you wander out of the shop feeling like you have avoided a potential weight loss derailment!

Hold your horses though...

Let’s take a little look at what actually goes into these seasonal drinks.


Gingerbread Latte

Short: 184 calories, 7g fat, 21.4g carbs,  19.9g  sugar,

Tall:258 calories, 10.6.g fat, 31.4g carbs,        28.8g sugar.

Grande:343 calories, 13.5g fat, 42g carbs, 39.3g sugar.

Short: 170 cals, 6g fat, 22.9g carbs, 21.3g sugar.

Tall: 272 calories, 9.5g fat, 36.8g carbs, 33.8g sugar.

Grande: 344 calories, 12.1g fat, 46.5g carbs, 43.1g sugar

Primo(drink in): 298 calories, 15.4g fat, 31.8g carbs, 26.2g sugar.

Primo (takeaway): 319 calories, 16.2g fat, 33.9g carbs, 28.3g sugar.

Medio (drink in): 428 calories, 21.7g fat, 46.2g carbs, 37.9g sugar.

Medio (takeaway): 443 calories, 22.3g fat, 47.7g carbs,  39.4g sugar.

Primo (drink in): 273 calories, 14.6g fat, 27.9g carbs, 25.8g sugar.

Primo (takeaway): 303 calories, 15.7g fat, 30.9g carbs, 28.8g sugar.

Medio (drink in): 361 calories, 19.9g fat, 35.3g carbs, 33.1g sugar, 10.4g protein

Medio (takeaway): 398 calories, 21.2g fat, 39.1g carbs, 36.8g sugar,





WOW...did you realise the amount of sugar/calories/fat in these things…

Even the lowest contains a lot!

(and you can be sure that any such derivatives of these that you see will be similar in the sugar and calorie load).

Imagine if anyone put 9-10 sugars in their normal tea or coffee…!

We would think they have gone mad!

Yet we don’t bat an eyelid when someone orders one of these little 'sugar/calories sneaks’!!

If you want to load up on some nutrition-less calories, overload on sugar, fats calories and pile on the pounds over winter, then knock yourself out and get 1-2 each day over the next month or so…!

However, I’m assuming you don’ steer clear most of the time… especially if weight loss or maintenance is the goal!

Now, that doesn’t mean never have one if you like ‘em, but be aware of them. If you are going to indulge plan it as part of your overall flexible nutrition plan.
